RECONSTRUCTIVE FLAP SURGERY IN HEAD AND NECK CANCER PATIENTS: CHALLENGES IN POSTOPERATIVE RADIOTHERAPY FROM AN INTERDISCIPLINARY PERSPECTIVE OF RADIATION ONCOLOGISTS

Abstract
Over the past two decades, significant advancements have been made in the surgical, radiotherapeutic, systemic, and supportive care of head and neck cancer (HNC). Despite these improvements, more than 75% of HNC patients are diagnosed at advanced stages and often require multimodal treatment strategies. While combined treatment approaches are essential to maximize the chances of cure, they also contribute to cumulative late toxicities. Surgery remains a cornerstone of HNC treatment, with approximately 60% of patients undergoing radiotherapy, either as part of definitive (chemo)radiotherapy or in the postoperative setting (poRT).
