THE ROLE OF PERLOCUTION IN SPEECH

Abstract
This article explores the nature and significance of perlocutionary acts within the framework of speech act theory, originally introduced by J.L. Austin and further developed by J.R. Searle. While the traditional focus of speech act theory has been on spoken interaction, this study extends the discussion to written communication, demonstrating that perlocution—the effect of an utterance on the listener or reader—plays an essential role in both modes. The paper distinguishes between locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary acts and emphasizes the transformative power of perlocution in shaping cognitive, emotional, and behavioral responses. Drawing on examples from everyday speech and written texts, the analysis shows how communicative intentions are realized through linguistic strategies. The study highlights the importance of perlocution in understanding not only the function of language but also its interactive and persuasive dimensions, particularly in genres such as literature, journalism, advertising, and political discourse.
